It's a question that comes up all the time, especially since they can look so similar. But here's the truth-these two aren't the same thing. One refers to a specific type of cake, while the other describes the pan it's baked in. Here's a simple breakdown of the differences so you know exactly what you're baking.

🧈 What is a Pound Cake?
A pound cake is a specific type of cake that originated in the 18th century, typically made in a bundt pan. Traditionally, it was made using one pound each of four key ingredients: butter, sugar, eggs, and flour. Of course, there are many variations of how to make a pound cake nowdays, but those are the basic ingredients. This simple ratio gave the cake its name-and its dense, rich texture.
Today's pound cakes may include ingredients like sour cream, cream cheese, heavy whipping cream, buttermilk, or extracts and/or leavening agents to enhance moisture and flavor. The first pound cakes did not include leaving agents such as baking powder and baking soda.
No matter the variation, pound cakes are known for being:
- Moist, yet dense and buttery
- Often baked in loaf pans or tube pans
- Usually served as is or dressed with a glaze, frosting or dusted with powdered sugar.
In short: "Pound cake" refers to the recipe itself. It's a style of cake with a specific texture and ingredient balance.

A Bundt cake is not a specific recipe, but rather a cake baked in a Bundt pan-a ring-shaped pan with fluted sides and a hole in the center. The term "Bundt" comes from the pan, not the cake inside.
Bundt cakes can be made from many different types of cake batters, including pound cakes or regular cake batters.
Bundt pans come in a variety of volumes and different designs making the cake look decorative even without an icing or glaze. Although they are typically iced or glazed, some are simply finished with a dusting of powdered sugar. Or even left as is.
In short: "Bundt cake" refers to the pan used which a wide range of recipes may be baked. I have even baked Monkey bread in my bundt pan and it came out beautifully.

If the recipe uses lighter ingredients, whipped egg whites, oil instead of butter, melted vs. room temperature butter, it likely isn't a true pound cake-even if it's baked in a Bundt pan.
In short: All pound cakes can be Bundt cakes, but not all Bundt cakes are pound cakes.
