In the south candied yams are like a dessert and a side dish at the same time. They are sweet, buttery, and full of spice.
I love to eat yams with greens, cornbread, and fried chicken. Talking about a winning combination. So let's get into it so I can show you how it's done!

Ingredients needed for the Baked Candied Yams:
- Large yams/sweet potatoes
- Unsalted butter- sliced
- Granulated sugar
- Cinnamon
- Nutmeg
- Vanilla
How to make the Candied Yams:
Preheat your oven to 350 degrees. Cut all of the skin from the potatoes, slice them into about ½ thick slices, and rinse them thoroughly.
Place the yams in a baking dish and add the vanilla flavoring. Then season the yams with cinnamon, nutmeg, and sugar. Using your fingers, massage the seasonings throughout all of the yams.
Cover the potatoes with foil and bake for about 1 ½ to 2 hours until the yams are fork-tender, but not falling apart.
Then, remove the yams from the oven, add the butter slices throughout the baking dish, recover and place back into the oven to allow the butter to melt.
Remove the yams from the oven and spoon the butter over the yams until all of the potatoes have been moistened.
Serve and enjoy!
Tips for cooking the Candied Yams
If your yams seem like they are a little dry, just add a few teaspoons of water or a little butter and place the foil back over them for a few minutes.
If they are not sweet enough for your taste, just add more sugar and place them back in the oven for a few minutes.
The recipe may appear to call for quite a bit of sugar, but if you know anything about candied yams, you have to use quite a bit of sugar for them to "taste like anything" and for them to become what is considered sweet for a candied yam.
Candied yams aren't as hard to get right as they may seem. All it takes is a little practice.
