Hot Water Cornbread is typically made with just cornmeal, hot water, sugar, and oil, but we're adding our own twist by adding jalapeno.
The jalapeno adds an extra boost of flavor and a little spice. Not into spice? Make sure to separate the seeds from the jalapeno pepper. The pepper is mild without the seeds.
It only takes a few minutes to mix the ingredients together and prep them for the oil so no need to stress that this will be an involved process.

Ingredients needed for the Hot Water Cornbread:
- Yellow Cornmeal Mix
- Granulated sugar
- Fresh jalapeno
- Hot water
- Vegetable oil
Steps to make the cornbread:
Add all of your ingredients to a bowl, and mix the ingredients together with your fingers. Then take portions of the mixture and roll them into the size of a golf ball. Then press each portion into a flat patty.
Once you have heated the oil in your skillet, place the mixture into the pan and fry it on each side for about two minutes or until golden brown.
You can fry them in any pan that you use for frying, but of course, there is nothing like frying in a cast-iron skillet.
After the cornbread had browned on each side, remove it from the pan and place the cornbread on a paper towel-covered dish to drain the excess oil.
Hot Water Cornbread Tips
Hot water cornbread is best eaten hot so you want to make this bread directly before serving it to prevent it from getting hard and cold. It will still be tolerable, but just isn't the same after the bread has completely cooled.
It's just like with any other fresh bread, it's best served right after cooking.
Hot Water Cornbread Tips continued...
If you are serving guests, you definitely want to cook this bread right before serving the meal. It will definitely be worth the wait for your guests.
Most of the time, if entertaining, we serve guests hors d'oeuvres to tide them over until we put the last finishing touches on the food anyway right?
That is my typical process so that I ensure my guests have hot and fresh food right out of the oven when they arrive!
